Belkin WeMo

Nice feature overview here.

X10 is cool but complicated; whereas this looks cool and simple.   |
» Bookcrossing A friend pointed me at Bookcrossing.

Seems like a great way to redistribute your old books and having some fun doing it.

The basic idea - label your old books with a unique identifier, then drop them off wherever you like. Log the 'drop' on the Bookcrossing website for someone to pick up. If they log the collection you can track who and where the book goes. Obviously there are the usual anonymity options and if a non-Bookcrossing person picks up the book they may choose not to join-up (its free, they make money selling accessories like custom labels and bookplates).

Pretty cool.   |
» Mailorder Beer A plug and a bit of a bookmark for myself - Beerstore in NZ does a great job of distributing beer of all kinds delivered to your door.

I've used them a few times now and they're quick and efficient - I even had one delivery with broken bottles which the couriers obviously screwed up and within a couple of days Beerstore had another order on my doorstep no questions asked. Now thats service !   |
» What is a karonkka? A friend of mine recently returned from Finland where he was examining a PhD defence - the process is called a Karonkka.

As well as getting decked out in a full-on tux & tails they actually had ceremonial swords to boot. How cool is that ?

Be sure to read Shauns other posts on the nature of research, patents, science and technology in New Zealand.   |
» TED Talks A friend of mine (cheers Eddie!) pointed me at the excellent TED Talk series.

Subscribe to their RSS feed now.

Theres always something you can set aside 15 minutes of your time to learn about or dump to your mp3 player to listen/watch while you commute.

Recent favourites of mine have included - 'Build a brain in a supercomputer', 'Our buggy moral code', 'What brain damage can point out about our mind', 'Why are babies cute? Why is cake sweet?'   |
» Useful Ways to be Persuasive I realised my Linkdump category hadn't been updated in a looong time so I'll kick start it with this link to some common-sense ways to be persuasive.

As per the link comments in the preamble, its a bit pop-psych but theres some useful stuff to help get your head around how you can get your point of view across to other people.   |
» Because you need to know - Tracking the $700 Billion Bailout It'll be interesting to see if the New York Times keeps this table up to date - Tracking the $700 Billion Bailout.

See which financial institutions receive money and how much they get.   |
» Good Music - Le Pop by Katzenjammer Discovered while reading Popmatters list of Also-rans for 2008 - Katzenjammers 'Le Pop' is one of those joyful albums by a band determined to put a stupid grin on your face at all costs or die trying (cf early Violent Femmes, Crowded House, Pogues).

Check out a couple of videos on YouTube - 'A bar in Amsterdam' and 'Aint no thang'   |
» Good Books - The Shock Doctrine Another excellent read from Naomi Klein - The Shock Doctrine. I have to admit I'm only halfway through this book - mans inhumanity to man makes for tough going - however its pretty much compulsory reading for anyone that wonders how the worlds free market economy's were lead down the track they're currently on.

Essentially what Klein does is posit the idea that free market economies and reforms can only be forced through on the back of an external crisis (sometimes real and sometimes engineered). As a result those people best placed to take advantage of the reforms do extraordinarily well and the vast majority of us end up worse off - with globalisation these disparities keep getting worse as multi-nationals cease to be bound by georgraphy.

As the recent recession and American bank / finance / auto bail-outs have shown - the free market has failed to a certain extent - their own calls for deregulation have bit them on the ass and now they're going cap in hand to the very regulatory bodies they once reviled for assistance.

So even when things go wrong for the wheelers and dealers of the world - they still come out on top.   |
» Good Books - Killing Rommel by Stephen Pressfield Another quick summer read - Killing Rommel is a return to form for Stephen Pressfield - his 'Gates of Fire' was a masterpiece but after that I found 'Tides of War' and 'Last of the Amazons' to be a little dry.

His latest novel tells the tale of the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) and their various exploits in the North African campaign, culminating in a mission to track down and kill Rommel.   |

YouTube Music Video - Liturgy

Tuesday 31 May 2011 at 6:24 pm Traditionally my metal has been firmly located in drone/stoner territory. The other stuff just leaves me cold.

Having said that I will give almost any music a crack at least once. So it was that I clicked on the video at the end of a Popmatters article on the band Liturgys new album Aesthetica and was duly impressed.

For some reason it reminds me less of metal than late 80's, early 90's noise rock (Big Black crossed with Vineland ?).

Good to see the young people of today churning out obnoxious music (black metal) with an intelligent twist (transcendental).

For some reason I just can't help hitting play every time it gets to the end . . .

YouTube Music Video - Katzenjammer

Saturday 13 March 2010 at 09:04 am Pretty much their entire 'Le Pop' album is awesome - finding a corresponding decent live video is a bit tougher. Small P & S cameras shooting video is not a great recipe for audio/video goodness.

Check them out doing - "To the Sea.

Full marks for striking rock poses with an accordion and smiling relentlessly throughout the performance.

Still waiting for them to tour in NZ - they'd kick-ass at one of our arts-festivals, wine-festivals or even St Patricks day festivities.

Come down-under Katzenjammer. I should start a petition.

YouTube Music Video - Godheadsilo

Saturday 25 July 2009 at 3:28 pm Godheadsilo are Mike Kunka and Dan Haugh; they were active from 1993 to 1998. In that brief period of time they released a number of singles/ep's and three albums.

Given they play bass and drums they're all about the lo-end of the musical spectrum - not in a techno drum 'n bass way but more the scouring noise rock way.

Theres not a whole lot of information about them online (TrouserPress, Sub Pop, Wikipedia) and they don't seem to have produced any music videos. Because its so hard to find anything online about the band it would be easy to dismiss them as also-rans in the mid-90's grunge-fest - however you'd be doing your ears a great disservice - Godheadsilo are just plain awesome.

Luckily a search on YouTube threw up the odd-gem, starting with some brief (and very grainy) live footage before I finally stumbled upon a decent live video of them in action:

You get some idea of the massive volume when you realise the vocals just aren't sufficiently loud enough to escape the distorted bass and huge kettle drums.

And it might just be me but the drummer appears to be a dead ringer for Boris Johnson.

Good Music - Le Pop by Katzenjammer

YouTube Music Video - Dirty Three

Monday 29 December 2008 at 3:58 pm I'm not a huge fan of Aussie rock - to my mind the two truly great musical things to have popped out of that continent have been Nick Cave and The Dirty Three.

Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds (and prior to that The Birthday Party) are pretty well known worldwide.

The Dirty Three on the other-hand are relatively unsung. Their albums are largely instrumental affairs - just drums, guitar and violin. Frontman Warren Ellis deftly flicks his violin between eerie melancholy and manic abandon, evoking elemental emotions from the listener. Their first two albums are compulsory listening and you can also see Warren Ellis in The Bad Seeds and Grinderman.

I was actually pleasantly surprised and somewhat shocked to discover there was actually a video for this song. God knows how they got the funding to make it given the song title - so be sure to check out the majestic - Everythings Fucked.

Its like the backing music to the final scene of a western movie when the protagonist is gunned down by the bad guy - no surprise then that Nick Cave and Warren Ellis wrote the score to the recent Aussie western 'The Proposition'.

If I had kids they'd wear these . . .

Monday 08 December 2008 at 9:56 pm And if you had kids you'd put them in these too . . .

Bundle of Joy Division T Shirt

Made by a kiwi company too.

I think I want to be two years old again.

YouTube Music Video - Tom Waits

Saturday 06 December 2008 at 5:03 pm I was poking around on YouTube and came across a swag of Tom Waits videos that I felt compelled to link to in the hope that anyone stumbling over this post would find something of his to their liking.

So here goes -

And of course Tom Waits talking shit with Iggy Pop on Coffee & Cigarettes.

Kiwi Music - Doledrums

Sunday 16 November 2008 at 6:35 pm Fantastic - picking up where KiwiTapes left off is The Doledroms.

Slowly uncovering some wonderful music blogs out there including Weedtemple & Takethepills. They all tend to cross reference each other and add a few more so you can easily spend hours finding hidden or lost gems from your past.

Update - also check out Youngmosstongue - some great stuff being posted over there. Almost one or two new items daily.

YouTube Music Video - Mogwai

Friday 11 July 2008 at 09:14 am What can I say other than Mogwai rule!

It was a toss-up as to which video to link to so I thought I'd add them both - 'Summer' and 'Christmas Steps'. Both live. The first is full length and the second is slightly truncated - it comes in just before the crescendo.

The genius in Mogwai's music lies in its simplicity, dynamics and lack of vocals - essentially every cliche has been rolled into a lyric at least a million times so why bother singing anything at all ?

Let the music carry your message.

YouTube Music Video - My Bloody Valentine

Sunday 29 June 2008 at 10:26 am My Bloody Valentine has reformed and the initial reviews of their live performances are in - and they're all pretty much awesome.

If you missed them play in the UK then you may as well go stick your head in a blender.

Their musical pinnacle was Soon. Watch and listen to the majestic woozy distortion and chiming guitars over the 'baggy' drums that make this such a timeless track.
